Betelgeuse Star Explosion Will DESTROY EVERYTHING in 2 Weeks

Okay, so there's been a lot of chatter online recently. People are saying that the star Betelgeuse is about to pop and that it'll wipe out all life on Earth within a couple of weeks. You've probably seen the doomsday videos and crazy headlines claiming that the supernova from this star will wreck our planet or even the whole solar system.

But is any of that real?

Let's get real, so here's the lowdown.

So, What's Betelgeuse?

Betelgeuse (it's said like Beetlejuice, yeah, like the movie) is a huge star in the Orion constellation. It's roughly 642 light-years away from us. It's what they call a red supergiant. This means it's nearing the end of its life. It's one of the most shiny and biggest stars we can see from here.

Since it's huge and old, folks who study space think Betelgeuse is gonna blow up in a big supernova someday. This will be a very cool thing to see from Earth, but it won't hurt us.

Why All the Freaking Out?

The worry started when astronomers saw that Betelgeuse has been dimming over the past few years. There was a well-known dimming back in 2019. That's when people started thinking it was about to die.

It is true that Betelgeuse will go supernova at some point, but someday in space terms is like saying it could happen tomorrow or 100,000 years from now.

There's no real proof that it's gonna happen in two weeks. Even if it did, it wouldn't be dangerous.

Will Earth Be Destroyed By a Supernova?

When Betelgeuse does blow, it'll be an amazing thing to see from Earth. It might be as shiny as the moon and be visible in the daytime for weeks.

But it won't kill us, and there's a reason for it.

Betelgeuse is too far. At over 600 light-years away, any harmful radiation from the explosion wouldn't be strong enough to hurt us.

A supernova would have to be within 50 light-years to really be a threat.

The main things we'd notice from something that far away would be light and neutrino emissions. These aren't harmful to people in small amounts.

NASA, the ESA, and stargazers all over say that a Betelgeuse supernova would be beautiful, but not the end of everything.

Okay, So What Will Happen When the Star Blows Up?

When Betelgeuse finally kicks the bucket, here's what we'll expect:

The star will brighten suddenly. It could be brighter than Venus or even the Moon.

The light show will last for weeks or months.

A neutron star or black hole will be made at its core.

Telescopes on Earth and in space will collect a lot of data.

This will be the best thing ever seen in the sky, not the end of days.

In Conclusion

It's fun to think about crazy space stuff, but we should be realistic about science. Betelgeuse will explode, but the explosion won't doom us.

So, no, we aren't gonna die in two weeks. But we might be about to see the most marvelous light display ever seen by humans.

  1. Who is actually freaking out? It is good that this article dismisses the idea of any danger, but is too generous about the supposed extent of "freaking out".
